Enzyme injections is a very good treatment for EARLY stage of Dupuytren’s disease and applied to people who have very small nodules in the palm of the hand. Injections cannot be performed for advanced, or severe stages of Dupuytren’s disease.
Often, the injection needs to be repeated two or three times in order to complete the therapeutic program.
Although that this is an excellent form of treatment for early stage disease most government sponsored medical programs (like RAMQ in Quebec, Canada) do not cover the cost of this type of treatment.

HOW IS IT DONE
Is an injectable solution of enzymes (purified collagenase clostridium histoliticum) that is injected directly into the Dupuytren’s cord. The enzymes break down the cord which allows the finger to straighten again.
Treatment with enzyme is a 3-day process that includes the injection of the solution, finger extension, and fabrication of a night-time splint.
Approximately 24 hours after the injection, your physician will carefully extend the injected finger to help release the cord. As many as three injections may be given into the cord of an affected finger or joint. No more than one finger and one joint may be injected per treatment. Patients must wait a minimum of 30 days to have enzyme treatment for another finger.

POTENTIAL RISKS AND COMPLICATIONS
The most common side effects with enzyme for the treatment of Dupuytren’s contracture include:
- swelling of the injection site or the hand
- bruising or bleeding at the injection site
- pain or tenderness of the injection site or the hand
- swelling of the lymph nodes (glands) in the elbow or armpit
- itching
- breaks in the skin
- redness or warmth of the skin
- pain in the armpit
